Scuola Palatina (English name)

...It is what is called the "Godescalc" today, and although the figures of the evangelists in it retain a schematic rigidity, the shadows on their clothes are used to bring out the roundness of their bodies, and a mixture of Germanic abstraction and ancient realism can be seen. The "Gospel of Adah" (c. 785), the "Gospel of Saint Medard" (early 9th century), and the "Gospel of Lorsch" (early 9th century) are collectively called the "Scuola palatina" manuscripts of the court school (also called the "Ada group"), but as time went on, they tended to have a somewhat more ancient, naturalistic realism. The series of manuscripts known as the "Viennese Coronation Gospels" includes the "Viennese Coronation Gospels" (early 9th century) and the "Aachen Treasury Gospels" (c. 800), and their aerial perspective backgrounds and well-defined figures are so archaic that they are reminiscent of the murals of Pompeii.
