…A land ownership and taxation system introduced in the Bengal Province by Governor Cornwallis in 1793 and implemented mainly in northern India throughout the British rule. It is also called the "perpetual zamindari (land tax) system." The word "zamindar" is a compound word of the Persian words zamin (land) and dār (owner), and meant landowners in general, but originally it included a variety of local ruling classes, such as the Hindu feudal lords who existed before the British rule, small village landowners, and Muslim nobles who became indigenous during the Mughal period. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Zamīndār" are listed below.
