A town in Nakauonuma County in southern Niigata Prefecture. The central settlement is on the river terrace of the Shinano River, and the Iiyama Line runs through it. The town is involved in silk weaving, rice cultivation, and vegetable cultivation such as radishes, carrots, and cabbage. There are many power plants. The town is home to the Nakatsugawa Valley, Sakasamaki Onsen, and Nanatsugama of Tashiro (a scenic spot and natural monument). Area: 170.21 km2 . Population: 10,881 (2010).
