A movement to improve people's lives flourished in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia in the 1920s and 1930s. In order to improve the economic conditions of farmers, fishermen, and workers, consumer cooperatives were established in each region, and these cooperatives were used as the core of efforts to promote self-help through adult education. It was born as part of the assertion of provincial rights by the maritime provinces in the 1920s, and is notable for its aim to improve people's spiritual as well as material conditions. Antigonish is a place name, located about 180 km northeast of Halifax, and is the site of St. Francis Xavier University, which produced the leaders of this movement.
