Japanese surfsmelt (English)

...It is delicious when grilled, deep-fried, or boiled in soy sauce. In the same genus is the Japanese surfsmelt, H. pretiosus japonicus , which is found in abundance in Mutsu Bay and along the coast of Hokkaido in Japan and grows larger than smelt. It is often used as a substitute because it looks similar, but it tastes bad.
