The Germanic tribes who expanded and settled in Scandinavia during the Great Migration Period are generally known as the North Germanic peoples, and throughout the Middle Ages they maintained social characteristics that differentiated them from other Germanic nations, while entering modern society. In particular, the social structure of the period preceding the establishment of the medieval state, commonly known as the Viking Age (late 8th century to mid-11th century), is of particular interest when considering the characteristics of Scandinavian history and when reconstructing ancient Germanic society.
