…He decided to dedicate himself to the Christian education of especially unfortunate young people, and in 1946 he established a village for about 700 young people in Valdocco, a suburb of Turin. In order to expand this educational work worldwide, Bosco and his comrades founded the Salesian Society, Societas Sancti Francisci Salesii, on December 18, 1959, which was officially recognized by Pope Pius IX on March 1, 1968. His religious order has expanded all over the world and serves the education of young people, with 16,915 members as of 1982, and 128 in Japan working in elementary, junior and senior high schools, junior colleges, and other welfare facilities. …
