A quiet rural town in the Eerste River basin in the Western Cape province of the southern part of South Africa. Population 43,000 (1985). Located about 40km east of Cape Town, it is the center of a grape-growing region, and has wine breweries, lumber factories, brick factories, tile factories, etc. There are also many cultural facilities, including Stellenbosch University.
