The school of painters active in Tuscany for almost a century from the beginning of the 13th century is called the Tuscan School. All of these painters were based on the Byzantine style, but against the backdrop of the economic prosperity caused by commercial activity in cities such as Pisa, Lucca, Arezzo, and Florence, they produced paintings that responded to the humanistic religious sentiments and fresh views of nature inspired by the teachings of Francis.
