A term in Chinese thought. Also known as the theory of heaven and man's response. The idea that there is a corresponding relationship between human affairs and natural phenomena (heaven), and that the good and bad actions of humans bring about abnormal changes in the natural world (good fortune or disaster). This idea was widely advocated by Confucian scholars in the Han dynasty, and it teaches that human affairs, especially the good and bad of politics, respond to heaven and manifest as natural disasters. The correlation between heaven and man is based on the principle of yin and yang, for example, heaven and man each have yin and yang, and when the yin energy of man moves, the yin energy of heaven moves in response, and so on, because the yin and yang of each react to each other. The theory of disaster (→ disaster thought) is a type of theory of the correlation between heaven and man.
