Stazione zoologica di Napoli

...a laboratory established on the coast mainly for experimental and ecological research in marine biology. The oldest laboratories of this kind are the Laboratoire maritime de Roscoff, established in 1872 at the University of Paris by H. de Lacaze-Duthiers (1821-1901), and the Stazione zoologica di Napoli, established in 1873 in Naples by the German AD Dohrn (1840-1909) at his own expense. The Neapolitan laboratory was of all kinds a joint-use system from the beginning, and scholars from all over the world, including H. Driesch, E. Metchnikoff, and A. Portman, conducted research there.
