History Editing Bureau

Japanese: 修史局 - しゅうしきょく
History Editing Bureau
A government-run National History Compilation Institute in the early Meiji period. It began in 1869 when the Historiographical Materials Compilation and National History Proofreading Bureau was established within the former Japanese Studies Kodansho. It then became the National History Compilation Bureau and the Dajokan History Department, before being renamed the Historiographical Bureau in 1875, where it collected historical materials and compiled the "Fukkoki" and "Meiji Shiyou." In 1877 it was renamed the Historiographical Institute, and Shigeno Yasutsugu, Kume Kunitake and others began compiling the "Dai Nihon Henronshi." In 1886 it became the Provisional Historiographical Bureau, and in 1888 it was transferred to Tokyo Imperial University, but the project of compiling a general history in Chinese reached a dead end, and it was abolished in 1893. Two years later it was re-established as the Historiographical Materials Compilation Section, whose main purpose was to compile historical materials, becoming the predecessor of the current Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo.
