A domain that ruled over the Matsumoto region of Shinano Province (Nagano Prefecture). The Azumi and Chikuma counties, which had long been the territory of the shugo daimyo Ogasawara clan, were conquered by Takeda Harunobu in 1550 (Tenbun 19), and were subsequently ruled by the Takeda clan, the Kiso clan, and then the Ogasawara clan again, but in 1590 (Tensho 18), Tokugawa Ieyasu and his subordinate daimyo moved to the Kanto region by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and when Ishikawa Kazumasa was appointed to the domain, the size of the domain was also fixed. When his son Yasunaga took over in 1592 (Bunroku 1), the domain's fief was about 80,000 koku, but in 1613 (Keicho 18), it was abolished. After that, the Ogasawara clan (Hidemasa, Tadazane), the Toda clan (Yasunaga, Yasunao) from 1617 (Genwa 3), the Matsudaira clan (Naomasa) from 1633 (Kan'ei 10), and the Hotta clan (Masamori) from 1638 were successively given fiefs, and from 1642 the Mizuno clan (Tadakiyo, Tadamoto, In 1726 (Kyoho 11), the Toda clan (Mitsuchika, Mitsuo, Mitsuyasu, Mitsumasa, Mitsuyoshi, Mitsuyuki, Mitsutora, Mitsutsune, Mitsunori) held fiefs in each of these domains until the Meiji Restoration. Except for the time of the Matsudaira clan, the clan was always a Fudai daimyo (feudal lord), and its territory was 80,000 to 60,000 koku, excluding the 100,000 koku of the Edo senior retainer Hotta clan. During the early Toda clan, 10,000 koku was allocated to the Suwa Takashima and Ina Takato domains, and during the later Toda clan, a further 10,000 koku was confiscated, reducing the domain area, but later, it managed over 50,000 koku of the Shogunate territory in Shinano as a deposit. The construction of Matsumoto Castle tower by the Ishikawa clan, the establishment of various systems during the Mizuno clan period and the Kasuke Incident, the compilation of Shinpu Toki, the removal of lords, the Kansei and Tenpo Reforms during the Toda clan period, and the second Tozenji Incident are well known. After the Meiji Restoration, it became Matsumoto Prefecture, was then incorporated into Chikuma Prefecture, and in 1876 (Meiji 9) became part of Nagano Prefecture. In 1590 (Tensho 18), Kazumasa Ishikawa began large-scale reconstruction, and the castle tower was completed around 1597 (Keicho 2) during the reign of Yasunaga.
