...When trade unions had a monopoly on the supply of skilled workers, walk-outs were common in factories and workplaces. However, as the proportion of semi-skilled and unskilled workers increased in the age of monopoly capitalism, walk-outs were easily met with strikebreakers, so sit-down strikes became the norm. A stay-in is an extension of this sit-down strike. While sit-down strikes are only for contracted working hours, a stay-in strike is a strike in which workers stay in their workplace for long periods of time. In terms of purpose, there are economic strikes with economic struggle as the goal, political strikes with political goals, and sympathy strikes to support workers in disputes in other industries or companies. In terms of the scope of strikers, there are management strikes within a single business, and general strikes that affect an entire industry, region, or country.
