An instrument for simultaneously measuring the vertical distribution of salinity and temperature. STDs come in two types: those with built-in recorders and those that are placed on board and linked to a computer. A platinum resistance thermometer is used as the temperature sensor, with an accuracy of 0.01°C. The development of the STD, which can simultaneously and continuously measure salinity, water temperature, and depth, is one of the breakthroughs in the history of marine observation.
