1845‐1918 Italian Catholic social theorist. Professor of economics at the University of Pisa. Influenced by Pope Leo XIII's encyclical Rerum Nourm, he rejected both liberalism and socialism, and advocated corporatism, a social theory that recognizes the ideal social order in medieval craft guilds. He also founded the International Union for Social Research, and was particularly instrumental in the theorization of Christian democracy and the organization of Catholic labor unions. His collected works were published by the Vatican from 1947 to 1953. [Murakami Shinichiro] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
