GUI - GYUAI

Graphical User Interface (GUI). It uses pictorial characters called "icons" on the computer screen and pictures of parts in the shape of "buttons" to scroll the screen, making it intuitive and easy to operate a personal computer. Until then, computers could only display text on the screen and users had to type commands into the keyboard, so it took a long time for users to become accustomed to using them. However, GUIs are easier to learn because they are operated using a device called a mouse that points to a position on the screen. In addition, images can be displayed together with text, and text can be displayed in a variety of font designs, allowing for more expressive displays. It can be considered a type of human interface that makes it easier to use between humans and machines. The current GUI built into Mac OS (Macintosh operating system) and Windows is based on one developed by Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in the early 1970s.

グラフィカル・ユーザー・インターフェース（Graphical User Interface）の略。コンピュータの画面に「アイコン」とよばれる絵文字を使ったり、画面をスクロールするために「ボタン」をかたどった部品の絵を使ったりして、パーソナルコンピュータ（パソコン）を直感的に、しかも簡単に操作できるようにしたもの。それまでのコンピュータは画面に文字しか表示できず、キーボードから命令（コマンド）を打ち込まなければならなかったのでユーザーが習熟するまでに時間がかかったが、GUIでは画面上で位置をさし示すマウスという装置を使って操作するので習得も簡単になる。また、画像を文字といっしょに表示したり、文字もさまざまなデザインの書体を使えたりと、より表現力の高い表示ができるようになる。人間と機械の間をより使いやすくしたヒューマン・インターフェースの一種といえる。Mac OS（マッキントッシュの基本ソフト）やWindows（ウィンドウズ）などに組み込まれた現在のGUIは、Xerox（ゼロックス）社のPARC（パロアルト研究センター）によって1970年代前半に開発されたものが原型になっている。
