The capital of the U.S. state of Oklahoma, located in the center of the state. Population: 463,000 (1994). The largest city in the state, and the center of politics, economy, commerce, and industry. It is located in an oil region discovered in 1928, and there are oil wells near the state capitol. Oil is the main product, and there are manufacturing industries such as oil field equipment, aircraft, and electrical machinery. The surrounding area is agricultural, and there are large livestock yards, meat canning factories, and cotton factories. When the center of Indian Territory was opened to whites on April 22, 1889, 10,000 people flocked to the area in search of land to operate their own farms, and Oklahoma City was formed.
