A perennial plant of the ginger family. It grows in the shade of trees in the mountains in warm areas west of southern Kanto. The underground stem is thickly branched and has scaly leaves. The biennial stem grows obliquely upward and grows in a bundle at a height of about 50 cm. The leaves are oblong and grow to 20-30 cm, with sharp points at both the top and bottom, resembling those of ginger. In May and June, a single stalk emerges from among the previous year's leaves, and a raceme bears three-petaled white flowers. The fleshy fruit ripens red in late autumn, and the numerous white seeds are used as a stomachic.
