A beautiful natural bay on the west coast of the Bataan Peninsula in the southwest of Luzon, Philippines. It is surrounded on three sides by the Zambales Mountains, and is 5-10 km wide and 15 km deep, opening into the South China Sea. In 1901, a US naval base was established in Olongapo, on the eastern coast of the inner bay, and the base facilities were subsequently greatly expanded, becoming the largest home port for the US Navy's Pacific Fleet in the Far East. US forces withdrew in 1992, and the site of the base was developed into a free trade zone. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
