A ruined city about 20km west of Baghdad, Iraq. Its current name is 'Aqar Qūf. It is famous for its ziggurat, which is over 50m high. As the name, meaning "Fortress of Kurigalzu," suggests, it was newly built by the Kassite king Kurigalzu as a royal capital and fortress. There is no consensus as to whether this king was Kurigalzu I (the 17th king?; year of reign unknown) or Kurigalzu II (the 22nd king; reigned 1332-1308 BC). Excavations by the Iraqi government from 1942 to 1945 uncovered the foundations of the ziggurat, as well as the remains of a temple and a royal palace.
