A commentary on The Tale of Genji written by Yotsutsuji Yoshinari. It was written around the Joji era (1362-1368) by order of Ashikaga Yoshiakira, the second shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. This book critically integrates previous commentaries and is based on extensive research using a wide range of cited texts, making it a culmination of the early period of research on The Tale of Genji. It is a groundbreaking work in the history of early commentaries on The Tale of Genji, and had a major influence on subsequent commentaries. Another feature of this book is that it focuses on both the Kawachi version, a copy by Minamoto Mitsuyuki and his son Chikayuki, and the Aobyoshi version, a copy by Fujiwara Teika, and that it strongly attempts to clarify the precedents and historical facts on which The Tale of Genji is based. The author, Yotsutsuji Yoshinari, was a scholar of Japanese studies during the Nanboku-cho period and the grandson of Prince Yoshimune, the son of Emperor Juntoku. In later years, he wrote about secret theories that were not included in "Kawakaisho" in "Sango Hisho."
