April 12th Coup d'état - April 12th Coup d'état
A coup d'état launched by Chiang Kai-shek in Shanghai on April 12, 1927. It is also known as the Shanghai Coup. During the Northern Expedition, Chiang Kai-shek had been deepening his conflict with the leftists such as Wang Jingwei, and despite their opposition, he decided to take control of the Jiangnan region, the economic heartland. With both the economy and the military under his control, Chiang Kai-shek carried out a coup d'état and established a right-wing government in Nanjing on April 18. This effectively led to the collapse of the first Kuomintang-Communist cooperation, and marked a major turning point in the Chinese Revolution. National Revolution [Takahashi Yoshikazu]
