[Physiology of Tears]
The main functions of tears are (1) to cover and lubricate the corneal surface, maintaining the optical function of the cornea, (2) to wash away foreign bodies on the conjunctiva and corneal surface, (3) to provide glucose and oxygen to the cornea, and (4) to act as an antibacterial agent. Tear fluid usually spreads over the cornea and conjunctiva to form a layer called the tear film, which consists of three layers: an oily layer, an aqueous layer, and a mucinous layer. The outermost oily layer is a lipid secreted from the meibomian glands in the eyelids, and by forming an oily film, it prevents tears from evaporating excessively and from spilling over the edge of the eyelid onto the face.
