Kreisky, B.

...The SPÖ was a party based on workers, but most of the radicals led by O. Bauer, known as the leading figure of Austrian Marxism, went into exile after 1934, and even after returning after the war, they no longer had a leading voice within the party. This weakened the character of the Marxist party, making it easier to form a coalition with the ÖVP. The party leadership passed from Scherf to Bruno Pittermann, Bruno Kreisky, and then to Franz Vranitzky. The Austrian Communist Party (Kommunistische Partei Österreichs) was founded on November 3, 1918, but did not gain any seats in the Reichstag during the First Republic. After the war, it was re-established by Johann Koplenig and E. Fischer, who had fled to Moscow. The Soviet occupying forces supported the party, hoping that it would grow, but it only managed to gain a few seats in the early Reichstag after the war, and it never grew as rapidly as the Soviet-occupied Eastern European countries.
