…From the first half to the second half of the 17th century, Japanese thread was produced in various parts of Japan, especially in Omi and Mino, and imported to Kyoto, supplementing the supply of raw silk. However, due to increasing demand, unstable supplies of white thread, and policies encouraging domestic production, by the mid-18th century, it also came to account for the majority of the supply to Kyoto's textile industry. Japanese thread wholesalers arose as Japanese thread production increased, and played a part in the distribution process from shippers in the production area → Japanese thread wholesalers in Kyoto → thread brokers → Nishijin weavers and braiders, etc. Their main sources of income were commissions received from both shippers and thread brokers, and interest on advances to shippers. …
