699-767 Islamic jurist. Founder of the Hanafi sect, one of the four Sunni schools of law. His grandfather was a slave brought to Kufa from Afghanistan, and his father's generation was a silk merchant. He studied law and theology mainly in Kufa, and after the death of his teacher Hammad, he was known as the leading authority on law in Kufa. He trained many disciples without taking up the position of qadi (judge). Many of his books are thought to have been written by later generations. He was imprisoned in Baghdad for suspected ties to the Shiite sect. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
