…Folk Christmas music has long been known as carols (British and American names; in France it is called noël, in Germany it is called Weihnachtslied). In Northern Europe, Christmas music is mainly an indoor event, but in Southern Europe, there has long been a custom of offering music to an altar outside, depicting the Virgin Mary and Child in the Stable.

In all countries, the songs tend to be familiar and cheerful.
