The myofibrils are the building blocks of muscle microstructure, and consist of numerous microfilaments that run lengthwise within a muscle cell (muscle fiber). They are about 1 nm in diameter, and are internally composed of filaments that are molecular assemblies of actin and myosin. Skeletal muscle myofibrils have a striated structure that is repeated at a regular interval along their length.
