Oxalis - Okizarisu

Japanese: オキザリス - おきざりす
Oxalis - Okizarisu

A bulbous plant of the Oxalidaceae family (APG classification: Oxalidaceae). There are native species all over the world, and over a dozen species native to tropical America and Africa are cultivated for decorative purposes. The bulbs are creeping rhizomes or bulbs. The flowers wilt at night or on rainy or cloudy days, so they should be grown in a sunny location as much as possible. Cold-sensitive varieties and autumn- or winter-flowering varieties are grown in greenhouses or frames, but summer-flowering varieties can also be planted in flower beds. They are propagated by bulb division. The genus name Oxalis comes from the Greek word for acid, as the sour juice comes out when the stems and leaves are chewed.

In autumn, it is planted in 3 bulbs in a 4- or 5-inch pot and cultivated in a frame. O. variabilis Jacq. is native to the Cape, and from November to the following spring, it produces flowers with a diameter of about 4 cm. There are three types of flowers: pink, red, and white. It is potted in September and cultivated in a frame. O. brasiliensis Lodd. is native to Brazil, and is relatively resistant to cold, so it can be planted outdoors. When planted in autumn, it produces deep purple-red flowers with a diameter of 1 to 2 cm around May. O. hirta L. is a stem species native to South Africa. When planted in autumn and cultivated in a greenhouse or frame, it produces red flowers from November to February of the following year. In warm areas, it can also overwinter outdoors. O. bowieana Lodd. is native to the Cape and, when planted in spring, produces deep red flowers 2-3 cm in diameter from summer to autumn. It is a hardy plant with strong cold resistance. O. debilis var. corymbosa (DC.) Lourteig ( O. martiana Zucc.) is native to South Africa and is cold-resistant. When planted in spring, it produces many small pink flowers from June to October. O. lobata Sims is native to Chile and is cold-resistant, producing yellow flowers from autumn to the following spring.
