A former town in Kita Matsuura County in the center of the Kita Matsuura Peninsula in northern Nagasaki Prefecture. It developed as a coal mining town from the mid-Meiji period onwards, but all the mines are now closed. Agriculture is practiced in the Sasa River basin, and tea is a specialty. 長崎県北部，北松浦半島中部の北松浦郡の旧町。明治中期以後炭鉱町として発展したが，現在はすべて閉山。佐々川流域で農業が行われ，茶を特産。2005年４月北松浦郡吉井町と佐世保市へ編入。32.02km2。4178人（2003）。
