A former town in Kita Matsuura County in the center of the Kita Matsuura Peninsula in northern Nagasaki Prefecture. It developed as a coal mining town from the mid-Meiji period onwards, but all the mines are now closed. Agriculture is practiced in the Sasa River basin, and tea is a specialty.
