…He is especially known for his research on mathematical ecology, which he conducted in the last 15 years of his life. This began with a story he heard from his son-in-law, fisheries scientist U. D'Ancona (1896-1964), about the phenomenon of fish species replacement in the Adriatic Sea. In order to explain this phenomenon, he proposed a differential equation model of the fluctuations in the populations of prey and predators, independently of the American AJ Lotka, in 1926. He continued his research in more detail, including models of interspecific competition, and became a pioneer of mathematical ecology alongside Lotka and others. …
