Born on July 29, 1796. He became a pupil of Shimizu Hamaomi, and later studied under Kariya Ekisai. His academic interests were broad, including Japanese, Chinese and Buddhist scriptures. After the Meiji Restoration, he became a doctorate holder at a university. He was also known as a book collector. He passed away on April 5, 1878, at the age of 82. He was from Edo. His real surname was Wakabayashi, and his pen name was Shikai. He was commonly known as Kan'emon, and his pen name was Kyosai. His works include "Kyosai Zatsuwa" and "Ankoku Ronko".
