Amakusa coalfields

Japanese: 天草炭田 - あまくさたんでん
Amakusa coalfields
A coalfield in the Amakusa Islands, Kumamoto Prefecture. The coal-bearing Paleogene is widely developed, especially on the Kamishima and Shimoshima islands. The coal is anthracite, but much of the coal in the north has been carbonized by the intrusion of igneous rocks, and in parts of the north and the central and southern parts, much of the coal has been carbonized due to faults. The reserves are said to be about 70 million tons, but there are currently no operating coal mines. [Ohashi Shusaku]
