...Similar phenomena were subsequently found in many animals and plants, but some scholars were skeptical that they were caused by the rhythms of the organisms themselves. F. Brown of the United States argued that because diurnal changes in subtle external factors such as gravity and geomagnetism cannot be ruled out in darkroom experiments, it is possible that these factors affect organisms. However, Brown's claim is no longer widely accepted, because when organisms' cycles are accurately measured under constant conditions such as in a darkroom or cave, they are not exactly 24 hours, but slightly different from the Earth's rotation period, and there are individual differences in the cycle.
