Hay-Pauncefote Treaty

Japanese: ヘイ=ポンスフォート条約 - ヘイポンスフォートじょうやく(英語表記)Hay‐Pauncefote Treaty
Hay-Pauncefote Treaty
A treaty concluded between the United States and Great Britain in November 1901 regarding the construction of the Panama Canal. It is named after the two negotiators, US Secretary of State J.M. Hay and British Ambassador to the United States J. Ponsfort. After the Spanish-American War, America acquired colonies in the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean, and became increasingly interested in the construction of a canal in the isthmus. America requested Britain to abolish the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty (1850), which provided for the joint construction of the canal, and asked for a new treaty in which America would build and operate the canal alone. Britain agreed to this, providing for free navigation of the canal and an equal taxation system.
