Born October 30, 1841. Studied under the Japanese mathematician Hasegawa Hiromu, then switched to Western mathematics. After serving as the principal of Osaka Normal School and the superintendent of Gakushuin, he became president of the Tokyo Mathematical Company in 1878, where he was involved in selecting mathematical terms. In his later years, he worked on compiling the book catalogue at the Academy of Japanese Literature. Died February 17, 1931. Age 85. Born in Edo. Maiden name Goto. Childhood name Hikoichiro.
