Okamoto Noribumi

1847-1931 A mathematician from the Meiji to Taisho era.
Born October 30, 1841. Studied under the Japanese mathematician Hasegawa Hiromu, then switched to Western mathematics. After serving as the principal of Osaka Normal School and the superintendent of Gakushuin, he became president of the Tokyo Mathematical Company in 1878, where he was involved in selecting mathematical terms. In his later years, he worked on compiling the book catalogue at the Academy of Japanese Literature. Died February 17, 1931. Age 85. Born in Edo. Maiden name Goto. Childhood name Hikoichiro.

弘化(こうか)4年10月30日生まれ。和算家長谷川弘(ひろむ)に師事し,のち洋算に転じる。大阪師範校長,学習院学監をへて,明治11年東京数学会社社長となり,数学用語の選定につとめた。晩年は学士院で蔵書目録の作成にあたった。昭和6年2月17日死去。85歳。江戸出身。旧姓は後藤。幼名は彦一郎。
