...A strait in northwestern Turkey that separates Europe and Asia and connects the Aegean Sea and the Sea of Marmara. Its name comes from the ancient Greek colony of Dardanus, which was located on the coast. Its Turkish name is the Çanakkale Strait. It is about 61 km long, 1.2 to 6.4 km wide, and has an average depth of 55 m (92 m at its deepest point). The cold currents of the Sea of Marmara and the warm currents of the Aegean Sea violently intersect in the strait, forming a rich fishing ground. The town of Çanakkale on the Asian side has a thriving fishing and canning industry. In ancient times, it was called the Hellespontos, and was an important waterway in the Byzantine Empire until the 14th century, but since the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire has monopolized navigation rights through it. ...
