Year of birth: August 14, 1852 (September 27, 1852)
An army officer during the Meiji period. Born in Edo as the son of Suwa Shinuemon, a samurai of the Wakayama (Kishu) domain. Adopted into the Okamoto family at a young age. Became an army captain in 1874, and promoted to major after the Satsuma Rebellion, but was arrested as a mastermind in the Takebashi Incident in 1888 and stripped of his official position. After becoming a ronin, he developed a friendship with Korean politician Kim Ok-gyun, and traveled to Korea in 1892. The following year, he led the assassination of Empress Min together with Korean envoy Miura Goro, and continued to work as a ronin on the mainland until his death in Shanghai. 明治期の陸軍軍人。和歌山(紀州)藩士諏訪新右衛門の子として江戸に生まれる。幼時に岡本家に養子入り。明治7(1874)年陸軍大尉となり,西南戦争後,少佐に進んだが,11年の竹橋騒動時に主謀者として捕らえられ官職剥奪。浪人したのち,朝鮮の政治家金玉均との親交を深め,27年朝鮮に渡る。翌年の閔妃暗殺を朝鮮公使三浦梧楼と共に指揮,その後も大陸浪人として活動,上海で死去した。東光と号す。<参考文献>黒竜会編『東亜先覚志士記伝』下,角田房子『閔妃暗殺』
