Year of death: May 14, 1912 (Meiji 45) Year of birth: August 14, 1852 (September 27, 1852) An army officer during the Meiji period. Born in Edo as the son of Suwa Shinuemon, a samurai of the Wakayama (Kishu) domain. Adopted into the Okamoto family at a young age. Became an army captain in 1874, and promoted to major after the Satsuma Rebellion, but was arrested as a mastermind in the Takebashi Incident in 1888 and stripped of his official position. After becoming a ronin, he developed a friendship with Korean politician Kim Ok-gyun, and traveled to Korea in 1892. The following year, he led the assassination of Empress Min together with Korean envoy Miura Goro, and continued to work as a ronin on the mainland until his death in Shanghai.
