Oil wholesaler - Aburadoiya

Japanese: 油問屋 - あぶらどいや

A general term for oil wholesalers in the early modern period. The center of the oil market in this era was Osaka, and politically, the most important issue was meeting the demand for kerosene for lighting in the city of Edo. The establishment of the oil market in Osaka was influenced by the remarkable development of the oil pressing industry in Osaka and its surrounding areas. Osaka's oil distribution mechanisms consisted of rapeseed and cottonseed wholesalers that handled the raw materials used in pressing oil, and oil wholesalers that handled the oil itself. The rapeseed and cottonseed wholesalers were established around the Kyoho era (1716-36), and included rapeseed wholesalers and cottonseed wholesalers.

近世，油を取り扱う問屋の総称。この時代の油市場の中心は大坂であり，政治的には江戸市中での照明用として灯油の需要を満たすことが最重要な課題であった。大坂における油市場成立の背景には，大坂およびその周辺地域での絞油業がいちじるしく展開したことが影響している。大坂の油の流通機構として，絞油原料であるナタネ，綿実を扱う両種物問屋と，油そのものを取り扱う油問屋がある。両種物問屋は享保(1716‐36)ごろに設立されたが，菜種問屋と綿実問屋とがある。
