A city in the Nord department in northern France. Population 94,000 (1990). Close to the Belgian border, it forms a conurbation with the departmental capital Lille and Roubaix to the south. Along with Roubaix, it is the largest producer of wool in France. It is known that woolen textiles were being produced there as early as the 12th century, and at the end of the 15th century, Maximilian I of Austria granted the privilege of holding a free periodical market. The wool and cotton industries developed significantly in the 19th century. [Isobe Keizo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
