In the late Edo period, the silk weaving industry developed, centered around Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture. It became famous as a producer of sturdy thick weaves and striped fabrics. Most of the fabric was produced by farmers on a rental loom, but at the end of the 19th century, takabata looms and chemical dyes were introduced, and kasuri fabrics were produced. Until World War II, it was a major producer of meisen. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
