Martyrs are often depicted holding a palm branch, symbolizing victory, and carrying the respective implements of martyrdom (Stephanus' Stone, Catherine's Wheel, etc.). The veneration of martyrs, which was particularly prevalent in the early Christian period, led to the decoration of their tombs and reliquaries with images, and the construction of various martyr's memorials (martyriums) in connection with these led to the development of large-scale iconography of martyrdom and martyrs (early Christian art). Iconography of martyrdom can be divided into two main categories:
