International Convention for the Safety of Life

In the same year, the ship departed Southampton for its maiden voyage, bound for New York, and on the night of April 14, it struck an iceberg off the coast of Newfoundland (41°46′N, 50°14′W) and sank the next day, killing 1,490 people (some say 1,513). In response to this, the world's largest maritime disaster, the British government established a Marine Accident Inquiry Commission under the Merchant Shipping Act, and the contents of the commission's report were incorporated into the international law known as the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (also known as the SOLAS Convention) in 1929. Its main provisions included monitoring and reporting of drift ice in the North Atlantic, strengthening ship structures, regulations on stability, watertight compartments, and openings, improving life-saving and fire-fighting equipment, improving radiotelegraph facilities, and requiring 24-hour listening to distress calls (SOS). The convention has been amended since then and continues to this day.
