1560‐1627 Spanish monk-painter. Born in Orgaz, Toledo. After studying painting in Toledo, he joined the Carthusian Order in 1603, and from 1612 painted many religious paintings and monk miracles at a monastery in Granada. At the same time, he became the founder of still-life painting with a strictness unique to Spain, even religious, with his bodegon (still life) paintings featuring vegetables in the kitchen, and had a great influence on 17th century Baroque painters such as Zurbarán.
