Chestnuts are dried, roasted in a roasting oven, pounded in a mortar, and the shells and skins removed. The small-sized Shibaguri variety is used. They were eaten when going out to battle as a lucky charm, and in the early Edo period they were considered auspicious foods, known as "victory chestnuts." They are still used today for celebrations such as New Year's. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
