A high-speed metal processing method using high energy such as gunpowder, high-energy discharge, and compressed air. It is one of the characteristic technological developments in the field of plastic processing after World War II, and research has been carried out from the perspective that a large processing force can be obtained with a small machine, and that high-speed deformation makes it possible to process products with shapes that cannot be made with low-speed processing, and also increases production efficiency. Explosive forming, which uses the explosive force of gunpowder to form the material, has the advantage that it can form in one pass what could not be done in one pass with a conventional press machine, and it can process materials that could not be forged with a normal hammer.

火薬，高エネルギー放電，圧縮空気などの高エネルギーを使用して，高速で行う金属加工法。小型の機械で大きな加工力が得られ，高速で変形すると低速加工ではできない形状の製品の加工が可能であり，生産能率も高められるなどの面から研究が進められた，第2次大戦後の塑性加工の分野での特徴ある技術開発の一つである。火薬の爆発力を材料の成形力に用いる爆発成形では，従来のプレス機械ではまとめて1回で行うことができなかった成形を1パスで行えるとか，また普通のハンマーで鍛造できなかった材料の加工が可能になるというような利点がある。
