…The Lares Familiares, the guardian deities of families, had statues in small shrines in every home, along with the Penates, and were worshipped with offerings on certain days of the calendar or on important family occasions, such as weddings. Others included the Lares Compitales, the guardian deities of crossroads, the Lares Viales, the guardian deities of roads and travelers, and the Lares Praestites, the guardian deities of states, the last of whom had a temple at the highest point of the Via Sacra in Rome.
