… For example, the School of Oriental Studies at the University of London has been renamed the School of Oriental and African Studies. The International Congress of Orientalists, the most prestigious academic association in Oriental studies, held its first meeting in Paris in 1873 and has been held mainly in Europe. However, when the 29th Congress was held in Paris in 1973 to commemorate its 100th anniversary, it was renamed the International Congress of Human Sciences in Asia and North Africa. This was because the word "Orient" was based on a Eurocentric way of thinking and was considered inappropriate in light of the wave of nationalism that had risen among the peoples of Asia and Africa after the Second World War. Incidentally, the 31st Congress was held for the first time in the Far East in Tokyo and Kyoto in 1983. …
