This private academic research institute was established in Osaka in 1919 (Taisho 8) by Ohara Magosaburo, president of Kurashiki Spinning Co., Ltd. Ohara trusted Takano Iwasaburo, the first director, and entrusted him with all aspects of the institute's operations. Under Takano, Kushida Tamizo, Ouchi Hyoe, Morito Tatsuo, and Kuruma Samezo became members of the institute, and they carried out academic research into social issues. They also made an effort to collect domestic and foreign literature, including rare books such as "Das Kapital" signed by Marx, and materials related to labor-farmer organizations for the compilation of the "Japanese Labor Yearbook" (first published in 1920), which is still in publication today. Due to financial difficulties, the institute moved to Tokyo in 1937 (Showa 12), and lost about 60,000 books in air raids during World War II. Fortunately, the valuable books and original materials survived, and were transferred to Hosei University in 1949 (Showa 24), where the library was rebuilt. The museum continued to collect materials after the war, storing union materials from the Industrial Federation Conference and the Toshiba Labor Union, as well as materials on the May Day Incident and the Matsukawa Incident. In addition to conducting research on labor and social issues, it has also been reprinting and publishing the journals of social movement groups since 1969, based on original materials stored before the war. In 1995, it published "A Chronology of the Social and Labor Movement," and in 1999, "100 Years of Japanese Labor Unions." 1919年(大正8)倉敷(くらしき)紡績社長大原孫三郎(まごさぶろう)によって大阪に設立された民間学術研究所。
